Gallery shop in Fujiya Gallery Hanayamomo

Fujiya Gallery Hanayamomo is one of the historic buildings in Kannawa. It is designated as a tangible cultural asset and worth visiting. Special events are occasionally held there.




A gallery shop with a small cafe is newly open there.  Gift items including simple tableware, fruits jams steamed at low temperature are sold at the cafe.

  

 
 
                                                      
Having a coffee break while looking at the beautiful Japanese garden makes you feel relaxed and peaceful. 
   ● Shop hours : from 10a.m. to 5p.m.
   ● Closed on Monday and Tuesday

Yukata trial fitting


A yukata is the kimono made of light cotton and mainly worn at summer events held outside, such as fireworks displays and bon-odori festivals. A yukata is also used as a pajama at Japanese inns ryokan after taking a bath.





A kimono shop, Murakami located near JR Beppu station offers yukata dressing service. They rent an attractive yukata to you and help you to dress it. In addition, they provide an opportunity to take a stroll through the downtown with the yukata for you.
  • Yukata dressing service:   ¥1,500
  • If you would like to stroll around for two hours, you need to pay another ¥500.




You can also purchase a colorful yukata at a reasonable price (¥5,250).

Souvenir shop at Beppu Ropeway

The Kintetsu Beppu Ropeway is the line climbs Mt. Tsurumi.

There is a souvenir shop near the station on the foot of the mountain, the name of it is "Kyushu Shochu kan."

(Shochu is a clear liquor distilled from sweet potato, rice, buckwheat, etc)

You will find very Japanese items besides Shochu in the shop, some of them are made in Ohita.

The prices are reasonable, some of small items are around 500 yen.

Cafe TAKEYA in front of Takegawara Onsen

Most of restaurants are closed after lunch time until dinner time (about 2:30-6:00), but some restaurants and cafes are open.
One of them is TAKEYA, which is a cafe in front of Takegawara Onsen.






Daily lunch special, which has some side dishes, rice and miso soup, is delicious, healthy and reasonable.


The curry bread (a deep-fried bread with thickened curry inside) is delicious, unique and popular.


It also serves "dangojiru", "onigiri"(a rice ball) and some kinds of drinks. The menu has pictures, so it is easy for foreigners to order.



Free wi-fi is available in the shop.

● Open hour : 10:00 - 19:00 (You can order meals from 11:00)
● Holiday : Monday (It is open, if Monday is a national holiday. In this case, the next day is closed)

Beppu Today (Nov. 25th 2012)



<Kitahama Marché   (monthly outdoor market)>

Kitahama Marché of this month was held today. Fresh vegetables, healthy breads and so on were sold. A mobile cafe was also open there. It was good weather for a walk and a tea break outside.

Beppu Kotsu Center

The Japanese have a custom of buying local specialties for family or friends back home, when we travel anywhere. If you travel in Japan, you might see a lot of gift shops for tourists here and there.

Beppu Kotsu Center is one of the useful facilities for tourists in Beppu. It is located in front of Beppu International Port (Beppu Kokusai Kankoko) which is a gateway to Kyushu Island from Kansai and Shikoku areas.
               
Orange-colored advertising display of the popular 'Shochu' is one of the landmarks. 










The first floor

It has a large gift shop which sells many local products from Beppu, Oita and other areas in Kyushu. Below are some of popular products you will find there.

<Bamboo crafts> 
Beppu has been long known for the bamboo crafts industry. Please reference to the beginning of this page <Beppu Bamboo Crafts> for details of the history. Baskets, flower vases, plates and chopsticks are sold in the shop.


<Sulfur salts, 'Yunohana'>
'Yunohana' is a kind of bath salts. You can mix it with bath water to create relaxing hot spring experience at home.



<Wooden clogs 'Geta'>
The 'geta' are said to be Japan's unique sandals and necessary when the Japanese wear 'yukata'. It is good for health to walk with the 'geta', because it simulates pressure points in the foot.













The local sakes, pickles, seasonings and confectioneries are also selling well.

The next to the gift shop is a restaurant, 'Chikushi', which serves local specialties of Oita, such as 'dangojiru' and 'toriten'. It is called Bamboo restaurant, because it is decorated by bamboo products around.

Excellent bamboo crafts, traditional artists' works are displayed in the bamboo museum, 'Take-Miraikan'. The entrance of the museum represents as a bamboo grove. The reproduction of an artist's private house and large-scale ornaments of bamboo could be found there. Admission is free.

If you are interested in working process, you are allowed to see the demonstration and experience to make a small basket at a reasonable price. It takes about 20 minutes to finish it.
