The Hells Tour in Beppu


"Jigoku Meguri" (or The Hells Tour) attracts you to Beppu. Myoban area is also worthy to visit.
Kamenoi Bus Company offers a half-day tour going to Jigoku and Myoban areas. 

  Kitahama Bus Center→ Beppu Station→ 8 hells→ Myoban area→
                                Kitahama Bus Center→ Beppu Station 

No appointment necessary, please plan to arrive ten minutes prior to the bus departure.

This tour allows you to visit 8 hells and see Myoban area through the bus window.  It takes 2 hours 40 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes. If you would like to walk in Myoban area, you could get off the bus and sightsee there by yourself. In this case, you could take local buses to return to Kitahama or Beppu station. The bus fare is for free if you show the guide book that was given to you when you purchased the tour ticket.

Devices, special audio pens that give multilingual guidance, such as  in English, Korean and Chinese are available just for this course.

Beppu Art Month


World famous Onsen Town Beppu offers a series of cultural activities such as art exhibition, dancing, music, movie films, etc. all through the year.

“Beppu Art Month” is held in every fall starting on October 06 through December 02 at several sites in the city of Beppu. This activity is open to the public to register wide range of their arts. We have 149 programs by 123 different groups. People can enjoy various kinds of arts here and there in Beppu for free or charged.

During this period, a very unique exhibition “Konyoku Onsen World (Mixed Bathing World) Festival” is also held. Some forty groups of local and worldwide artists have carried their artistic products featuring Onsen Town Beppu to this festival.

The sign below is on the roof of 'Kamifujiya Ryokan' in Kannawa area. It illuminates the street in front of 'Mushiyu' after dark. This message is a part of the poetry which the artist of PROJECT03 composed. 


The poetry describes the feeling of  the artist, Shilpa Gupta about Beppu.

Beppu International port (Beppu Kokusai Kankoko) and around it

  Beppu Kankoko extends 1Km south to north along Route 10.
It is situated about  3 Km north of Beppu downtown.
  (3.6 Km from Beppu JR station)

  There are two ferry terminals.
One is  Ferry Sunflower between Beppu and Osaka.
The other is Uwajima Unyu Ferry between Beppu and Yahatahama.
They are about 600 meters away from each other.

 Go out the Ferry sunflower terminal building, there is a bus stop on your left,
the name of the bus stop is "Kansaikisen Mae."
(indicated by the red sphere on the photo below)

Kamenoi Buses ( Bus Number 16, 16A and 20 ) take you to
the bus stop "Beppu Kitahama (Beppu downtown)" and "Beppu Eki (Beppu JR Station)."

      From "Kansaikisen Mae" to "Beppu Kitahama", it takes about  9 minutes
      From "Kansaikisen Mae" to "Beppu JR Station", it takes about 12 minutes.

There are two bus stops on both sides of Beppu Kotsu Center building.
The name of the both bus stops is "Beppu Kotsu Center."
If you go to Beppu Kitahama or Beppu JR Station, take buses from the bus stop
at the other side (mountain side) of the building, not this side (facing Beppu bay).

Kamenoi Buses ( Bus Number 16, 16A, 20 ) take you to
the bus stop "Beppu Kitahama (Beppu downtown)" and "Beppu Eki (Beppu JR Station)."

Saboh Shinanoya

The building of Saboh(Tea House) Shinanoya was originally built as a vacation home at the beginning of the Showa era and  later remodeled to the restaurant.Its Japanese atmosphere attracts not only Japanese people but also tourists from foreign countries.

Dangojiru, Japanese dumpling soup, of this restaurant is recommended for health conscious customers, because, not like in most other restaurants, it is a meat free diet.
It tastes plain, but as the soup stock is made from scratch, you will be satisfied with it.

Dangojiru teishoku (or set menu of Dangojiru) comes with some side dishes. They are  good, too.

Harmoney Land in Hiji, neighboring town to Beppu

  Harmony Land in Hiji, neighboring town to Beppu, starts its Autumn Night Illumination on October 06. It lasts until November 04.
  The popular night illumination of Harmony Land has changed its decoration from summer feature to autumn one on October 06.
  The image of autumn and bamboo is represented with the brilliant illumination of 710,000 lightings. 
Halloween events will last until November 04 and Christmas events will follow.
  At the site of “Lighting Tanabata (the Weaver) Legend”, bamboos and 230,000 of luminous diode lights (LED) are decorated. Dark passages are softly emit-lighted by LED and the objects of “Bamboo arches”, “Bamboo fans”, etc. create fantastic atmosphere.
  The night events of Harmony Land began last August and will last until May, 2013, mainly on weekends, changing its themes and events at each season. Six deferent features will be presented throughout the period. 
 
  The ticket good for night events (after 4 o’clock) only is 1,000 yen. (4 years or older)

Onsen (Hot spring bathing) in Beppu


Beppu is one of the most famous and preferred hot spring (Onsen in Japanese) resort
in Japan.

<Takegawara Onsen>
   Takegawara Onsen is popular because of its symbolic old Japanese building
    constructed in 1938.
   There are normal Onsens and a sand bath (or Sunayu in Japanese).
    It's about 10 minutes' walk from Bappu JR station.

Shopping near Beppu JR station

<Tokiwa Department store (in Beppu) >  
  It is at the corner of Ekimae dori and route 10.
  In addition to the regular items found in most department stores,
it is promoting local specialties such as
Shiitake mushroom,  Kabosu citrus fruit, Bungo beef, 
dried fish, barley shochu distilled spirit and etc. that have been developed 
in the Isson Ippin Undo (One Village One Product movement) originated in Ohita.
  On the seventh floor, there are restaurants serving Japanese, Chinese 
and Western dishes. The seethrough elevator take you directly to the seventh floor.
  In front of the department-store facing Route 10, there is Beppu Kitahama
Bus Stop from where Highway Buses are available to Fukuoka and some other
destinations. On the first floor in the department store, there is
Starbucks coffee (8:00-21:00) where the bus stop is in full view.

<Youme town Beppu>
  At the T-intersection with Route10 and Nagarekawadori, there is Youme town. 
It's a three-story shopping mall opens until 10PM. Food, clothes, groceries and 
other basic necessities are sold there. 
  On the first floor, there are restaurants serving 
          Japanese foods, Sushi       
          Japanese Soba, Udon 
          Champon Ramen, Steak, Humberger, 
          Italian foods and etc. 
   On the third floor, there is a food court from where Beppu bay can be seen.
  The detail information is on the FLOOR Guide in English, Chinse and Korean
available for you at service counter on the 1st floor in Youme town.

<Beppu Station Center>
  Beppu Station Center is in the Beppu JR station building and underneath
the elevated railway tracks. It consists of four area, B-passage, BIS Minamikan,
Yamada Denki (an electrical retail shop) and Beppu Station Market. 
  - B-passage and BIS Minamikan are in the station building.
      The former is in front of the main ticket gate and the latter is on the opposite side.
      There are restaurants, fast-food shops, café, souvenir shops, a bakery,
      a convenience store and so on. 
       ATMs, lockers, rental cicycles are also available.

      Go out from Beppu station East gate and turn left, you will see a yellow building.

     At the south end of Beppu Station center, there is Beppu Station Market.
The market earns the nickname "the kitchen of Beppu."
There are delicatessens, Toriten, Sushi roll, mixed rice, salad, Templa and
etc.

<Shopping Streets>
  When you go down the left side of Ekimae Dori street from Beppu JR station
toward Route 10, you will find the arcade entrance of Hot Street Yayoi on your right.
If you walk one more block,  there is our Foreign Tourist Information Office
at the corner and turn left, it's Sol Paseo Ginza Shopping street.
  These streets have been realized as the center of Beppu down town from
Showa era.
There are souvenir shops, restaurants, cosmetic shops, Japanese Kimono
shops and so on.
